Recommended online bilingual dictionaries

These two online dictionaries are the best ones we in the Languages department have found so far. Use them carefully when you have extended pieces of writing to do. Year 10 may want to use them when they are preparing for assessments.

For French, go to www.wordreference.com/enfr

For German, go to dict.leo.org

Remember, these are dictionaries, not translators. You can use them to look up individual words, not translate entire pieces of writing.

Year 10 must also remember that you are not allowed to use any online translators for your work, and your languages teacher(s) WILL be able to tell! You are, however, permitted to use these dictionaries to help you.

If you know of a better online dictionary (NOT translator!), then please let us know by leaving a comment and we will have a look at it.

Flora and Marc are studying.

Marc: (putting school notes away) Na, was soll denn das? Ich dachte, dass wir in die Stadt gehen.

Flora: Nee, tut mir leid, ich muss lernen. Ich schreib’ morgen eine Mathearbeit. Und ich habe echt Angst, eine schlechte Note zu bekommen.

Marc: Bist du nicht gut in Mathe?

Flora: Nein, Mathe mag ich überhaupt nicht; ich krieg’ immer schlechte Noten.

Marc: Komm, ich helfe dir. Mathe ist mein Lieblingsfach. Du musst einfach nur logisch denken.

Flora: (laughs) Na gut, ich mache fünf Minuten Pause.

Marc: Sag mal, wenn du Mathe nicht magst, was lernst du denn am liebsten?

Flora: Mm ... ich mag gerne Fremdsprachen: Englisch, Französisch, Spanisch … ich finde Englisch etwas kompliziert, aber eine Fremdsprache ist immer nützlich, vor allem wenn man im Ausland studieren möchte. Stimmt, hast du nicht letztes Jahr ein Klassenausflug nach England gemacht?

Marc: (laughs) Ja, das war vielleicht lustig! Einmal waren wir in der Schule. Total anders als bei uns. Die Leute tragen da zum Beispiel Uniformen: so ’n langweiliges blaues Sweatshirt und sogar einen Schlips.

Flora: Echt? Wieso?

Marc: Keine Ahnung. Aber das finde ich total doof und altmodisch. (Rifles in rucksack for a photo) Guck mal, da sind einige Schüler in einem Klassenzimmer. Ich war der einzige mit Jeans!

Flora: (laughs) Und was musstest du sonst so an der Schule machen?

Marc: Na ja, die Regeln sind da ungefähr wie bei uns: man muss pünktlich zur Schule kommen und man darf natürlich nicht rauchen. Ich finde das eigentlich normal.

Flora: Wie war die Schule sonst so?

Marc: Nicht schlecht. Die Klassen sind groß, über dreißig Schüler!

Flora: Wow, bei uns gibt’s nur fünfundzwanzig.

Marc: Ja, das war eine Gesamtschule und ziemlich modern. Aber das einzige Problem ist, dass die armen Briten so viele Hausaufgaben haben, doppelt so viel wie bei uns, und dazu haben sie noch nach der Schule AGs, wie Musik und Sport und so. Manchmal kommen sie erst um fünf Uhr mit dem Bus nach Hause.

Flora: Wie schrecklich, ich komm’ immer spätestens um halb drei nach Hause.

Marc: Aber vergiss nicht, dass die Schule erst um neun Uhr beginnt, während wir um Viertel vor acht unsere erste Stunde haben.

Flora: Hast du in England Angst vor Mobbing gehabt?

Marc: Nee, nicht mehr als hier. Im Gegenteil, ich habe viele Freunde gefunden. Ein paar wollen uns in Deutschland besuchen kommen.

Flora: Hmm ... (remembers her maths and looks at watch) Ach du Schande, Marc, weißt du, wie spät es ist? Es ist schon sechs Uhr. Ich muss noch richtig lernen, ich habe echt Angst vor der Prüfung.

Marc: Komm, dann lass uns mal anfangen … (picks up her exercise book) … das ist schon mal falsch … (fades)

Je me présente, je m’appelle Nadia. J’habite ici à Lille et ma passion c’est l’équitation. J’en fais depuis 7 ans, depuis que je suis toute petite en fait et je suis accro! J’adore les chevaux. Pour moi, monter à cheval, c’est la meilleure expérience au monde. On est libre, en harmonie avec un animal.

Voici mon poney. Il s’appelle Dahlia et il a 17 ans. J’ai beaucoup de chance d’avoir un poney. Je le sais.

Quand on débute, il y a énormément de choses à apprendre. On apprend comment seller son cheval. Voici ma selle. Il faut l’attacher correctement.

Quand je monte à cheval, je mets un pantalon, un tee-shirt et des mini-chaps. Mon style est plutôt décontracté, mais j’ai toujours ma bombe. Il est important de porter sa bombe car les chutes sont fréquentes et on peut se faire mal. J’ai appris comment m’occuper, comment prendre soin de mon poney et pour ça je dois dire, il faut beaucoup de temps, car il faut venir tous les jours, tous les jours sans exception. Et si tu pars en vacances, il faut trouver quelqu’un pour s’occuper de ton poney. Tu es responsable de lui.

On apprend à monter à cheval comme ça. Puis il faut régler ses étriers, pas trop courts, pas trop longs. Puis on vérifie la selle. Il faut parler à ton poney, le guider avec tes mains et tes jambes pour qu’il te comprenne. Moi, je parle tout le temps à Dahlia pour l’encourager, pour le calmer. Je lui fais des câlins, je le félicite, j’utilise rarement ma cravache, mais quelquefois, c’est nécessaire.

On apprend toutes sortes de techniques. Ça dépend du genre d’équitation que tu fais. Mais tout le monde apprend d’abord à marcher, ensuite à trotter et puis à galoper. On apprend à sauter. On apprend à sauter! Dalhia est un bon sauteur.

Elle, c’est Jeanne, c’est ma meilleure amie, et elle est sur Dalhia. Elle est concentrée, là parce qu’elle se prépare pour la demi-finale, mais normalement elle est super cool. On a fait des stages ensemble, on s’entraine ensemble. On rigole bien mais on travaille. On rigole bien mais on travaille! L’année prochaine on va aller au championnat de France avec mon club. Ça va être génial car on va rencontrer des pros! Mais, pour moi les concours ce n’est pas l’essentiel, je fais de l’équitation parce que j’adore ça. C’est ma passion, c’est tout.
